Gr 8 Up—A compilation of profiles and personal stories of teens who have dealt with some sort of obstacle in their lives. The book covers topics such as divorce, bullying, teenage pregnancy, homosexuality and coming out, anorexia, cutting, death (including suicide), drinking, etc. The author discusses her own experiences, which gives the book a personal touch. She includes sidebars with quotes and advice, facts, and questions and answers about the featured topic. Experts in these fields offer readers suggestions for what to do/how to cope if they find themselves in certain situations. They also post "what if"-type questions. For example, in the section on suicide, the expert poses the question, "What should I do if my thoughts become suicidal?" He or she then offers many answers to the questions. The book has a positive spin on it, as the interviewed teens have all overcome their issues/obstacles. The author is Australian, so some of the spellings and vocabulary might be unfamiliar to American readers. Female and male teens are equally represented. However, the cover might be more appealing to girls. Overall the book is informative but the facts are softened with personal accounts. A solid addition.—Sarah K.
