Gr 2–4—Each book brings to life a well-known Egyptian myth. The design fits the content: the text is bordered by patterns that mimic hieroglyphics and textured backgrounds in earth tones evoke deserts. The illustrations vary in style; Prince and Thoth both have realistic acrylic, watercolor, gouache, and digital images that feel flat and emotionless. However, the artwork in the other two books is far more engaging. Isis and Osiris, in particular, has expressive, dramatic illustrations (Set and Horus sparring as wide-mouthed hippos, Isis falling under a sleep spell) and rich hues that perfectly set the mood. The narratives are exciting, though asides that define unfamiliar terms occasionally interrupt the flow. Good introductions.
