Gr 2-4–This juvenile nonfiction title will excite further investigation into myriad subjects: microwaves, ultraviolet and infrared light, electromagnetism, ultrasound, and smells. These are all truly invisible to the eye. Barr’s clear text and Wilson’s colorful, mixed media illustrations make the basics understandable. They are defined and explained to pique interest for individual and report study. The text reveals how animals use these forces to survive and thrive, and directs attention to how humanity uses them in practical and amazing ways to enhance the quality of life on Earth. The British spellings may confuse some readers in the United States. The book also lacks documentation; the unsatisfactory glossary does not define all the key concepts.
VERDICT Consider this title for children on the verge of discovering that science is interesting.
