The text is displayed in short paragraphs in separate boxes, which can create a disconnected reading experience. Vocabulary words are bolded, but there is no glossary. The gardening activities at the end of each chapter have easy-to-follow instructions and are enticing ways to get children outside, but many require supplies like soil thermometers that readers may not have on hand. At times, the book reads more like a textbook or even one written for an audience of adults who are teaching children, which could deter more reluctant readers.
