Gr 7 Up—Young people from San Francisco's Boys & Girls Club in the area of the city known as the Tenderloin were given the opportunity to describe their neighborhood with photos and interviews. Each section covers a different topic, such as living conditions, safe passage to school, and food. One teen took pictures of dirty syringes that littered the streets to promote the idea of drop boxes to keep the neighborhood clean. The essays and interviews are simple, though heartfelt. However, the design is somewhat lacking: often, the book goes several pages without an image, and many photos are small, making it difficult to study the details.
VERDICT Suitable for libraries looking for titles that allow young people to express themselves; otherwise, an additional selection.
