Gr 3–5—This nonfiction title is beautifully illustrated by 10 different illustrators, making it as delightful to the eye as it is to the mind. Ten major world cities are covered, including New York, Tokyo, Paris, Cairo, Rio de Janeiro, and London; each are given their own spread and illustrator. The text is easy to read and the information is riveting, with facts about the cities' cultures, landmarks, and histories featured. The book's foldout format creates a reading experience of unearthing an educational treasure trove. Artifacts, food, fashion, architecture, and even some famous dogs are illustrated in exquisite detail. Readers will learn about the Ostankino Tower in Moscow, the mythological origin of Rome, and the Süleymaniye mosque in Istanbul.
VERDICT While the format may not fare well in high-traffic libraries, librarians should still seriously consider for geography collections.
