K-Gr 2—Written for newly independent readers, this series describes common means of transportation. Each spread consists of a one or two sentences in large, clear font that explain the accompanying full-color, full-page photo. The images are sharp and clear (except for one shot in
Train). There is some oversimplification, e.g., "Wings keep them in the air" in
Plane, and a misleading statement in Car: "A car has two pedals." Despite obvious constraints of vocabulary, space, and word count, the author does a good job of describing the variety within the individual transportation methods (for example,
Bike talks about road bikes and BMX bikes). The texts end abruptly, with no attempt at conclusions.
