If the Magic Fits

Gr 4–6—Eleven-year-old Darling Dimple has spent her entire life working as a pot scrubber in the basement kitchens of a castle in the kingdom of Eliora, so she can scarcely believe her good fortune when she is tapped to serve as Princess Mariposa's under-presser, responsible for ironing all the princess's sheets, towels, and handkerchiefs. Adjacent to the pressing room are closets filled with dresses, including a closet with 100 dresses nobody ever wears. When Darling sneaks into the closet and tries on a few dresses, she discovers that they are magical: each one can disguise her as someone else in the castle. When Darling overhears a plan to topple the monarchy, she knows she must use the dresses to stop the nefarious scheme. Along the way, she uncovers other secrets inside the castle walls. Jessica Almasy's energetic narration is a perfect match for this title, with a different voice for each character.
