Gr 8 Up—"You burdened me with an impossible quest. You took from me my sword, my horse and my strength, and then you sent me here to suffer a weak human life." Sixteen years after Ian was flushed down a massive obsidian cosmic toilet and sent to Earth as a three-month-old infant, the skinny, nerdy kid discovers who he really is thanks to his coach: a warrior from the planet Bankhir. He's told that he has only a few weeks to find the princess of a neighboring planet, fall in love, and save his planet from a fearsome wizard who intends to rule both their home worlds. Fortunately, the princess in question has just arrived at his school. Unfortunately, she has no idea who she truly is and is burdened with her own problems. But magical powers, a legendary sword, and a mischievous horse, to say nothing of the coach, help pave the way to true love…or something resembling it. This absurdly funny, action-packed novel will have teens (and probably their parents) reading long into the night.
VERDICT The only bad thing about this first book in a promising new series is the moment when the last page is turned, and readers realize they'll have to wait for the next installment.
