PreS–A little boy wants a pet. He doesn’t know how to get one so he takes off for the zoo with a wagon and a net. He goes through descriptive words such as “too high” (a giraffe), “too slow” (a turtle), etc., before noticing the puppy that has been following him all along. The text is full of rhyming words and bright, colorful illustrations. The simple text and sweet pictures make this a good read-aloud for a young audience.–Kris Hickey, Columbus Metropolitan Library, OH
Told in spare rhyming text, a little boy visits an imaginary zoo looking for a new pet, but the animals are too high, low, fast, slow, hairy, or scary. Finally he realizes that the doggy he already has is the perfect pet. Large, emotive illustrations quietly depict the loyal dog at the boy's side, expressing its opinions on the potential usurpers.
