Gr 3-7–Not everyone can be the brains behind the operation, and that is why Huck the cat has Hairball. Even though Hairball was recently coughed up by Huck, his list of esteemed inventions is impressive: first, the Mood Pickle (which changes color with your mood), and second, the litterbox time machine. Unfortunately, the Mood Pickle was a flop, but the litterbox time machine will certainly put Huck and Hairball on the map. When the duo uses the litterbox to travel way, way back in time and Huck eats a Darwinian fish making its first trip onto land, the entire universe is doomed by the change in past events, trapping the two in a time paradox. The only thing that will undo it is to make another small change in the trajectory of time by stopping the internet’s first troll from posting a negative comment. Lovable Huck and unassuming brainiac Hairball’s shenanigans harken back to beloved 1990s cartoons like Ren and Stimpy and Pinky and the Brain. This graphic novel will certainly appeal to “Dog Man” enthusiasts who have either aged out of the series or cannot wait for the next one and need something to read in between.
VERDICT Moyer has a hit with this ridiculously smart and silly time-traveling escapade that will have elementary school readers in stitches and hoping for another hairbrained scheme tout de suite.
