Gr 9 Up—Warning: the first 40 minutes of this documentary may bum viewers out completely. Filmmaker Josh Fox looks at the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy and at what climate change is doing to the planet, and he comes to the realization that there is nothing humanity can do to stop the worst of it. The temperature of the earth will rise, ice caps will melt, and coastal cities will be submerged underwater. But soon the film takes a turn and Fox focuses on positive actions humanity can and should embrace. Since the worst of climate change is inevitable, what will be left that we can hold on to and even celebrate? Fox travels all over the world, meeting environmentalists in Peru, Zambia, the South Pacific, and China, and finds the good in humanity. What can't climate change? Innovation, resilience, creativity, courage, song, and dance. The use of music is striking and of obvious personal importance to Fox. He not only includes familiar songs but also performs many on his banjo. Fox is featured heavily in this film, which may make it more personal for some viewers but may turn others off.
VERDICT Teachers screening this in an environmental, earth, or political science class, be aware: this is a very moving film but a bit slow-paced. However, this documentary may move older high school students to tears and inspire them to become climate change warriors.
