Gr 3–5—The timely
President is divided into three parts: "The Right To Choose," "Electoral College," and "Political Parties." The film goes back to the 1760s and briefly lays out how the United States became an independent nation. There is an excellent example of how the electoral college works, using a comparison between Maine and California juxtaposed on a map of America. It includes still photos of primary source material and actual footage of more recent events, with clips of Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, and Donald Trump.
Symbols concisely describes the history of such (loosely defined) symbols as the Pledge of Allegiance, the Star Spangled Banner, the Statue of Liberty, and the Freedom Tower. Little-known facts are revealed. For example, Uncle Sam was based on Samuel Wilson, who supplied meat to soldiers during the War of 1812. The film also explores the symbols on our currency, defining the Latin terms. Whenever words are explained, the definitions are displayed.
VERDICT These short but comprehensive films about important rights and symbols are presented in a clear, concise fashion. They would be appropriate for those new to our country as well as for elementary students.
