The picture book describes the different things that might happen to the bear physically, “Your friend might look different; she might have less hair. She might be too tired to play.” Then, it goes into all of the things you can do to help, such as bring cards, play games, or simply just be there. Bayer personally experienced a sickness during childhood and draws upon her experience as described in the author note. The digital illustrations help guide the story without overwhelming readers.
VERDICT A great purchase for libraries who need a book about supporting a friend through illness. This book could find a home in fiction or nonfiction shelves.
