K-Gr 4—Fun measurement comparisons (weight, height, speed, age, strength) contrast mighty rhinoceros beetles with puny humans, lightweight poodles with massive elephants, and waterlogged storm clouds with dinky bathtubs, among many others. Each spread features a brief paragraph of chatty text and two or more comparisons in a clean, striking design with plenty of white space. Crisply lined, lithographlike illustrations feature bold, flat areas of mostly primary colors in a retro style. The translation from German to English and from metric to imperial units occasionally misses the mark, such as when the text states that the giant red kangaroo "jumps through Australia at almost 56 miles per hour. They reach a maximum speed of 55 miles per hour to be exact…." Worse yet, the book twice lists 670,000 miles per hour as the speed of light, but the true figure is around 1,000 times larger.
VERDICT Despite an appealing design, the unsuccessful translation and some glaring errors mean this book fails to measure up.
