Hiccup!

K-Gr 2—With its hilarious, witty, and fast-paced plot, Hiccup! will have beginning readers laughing out loud. Jamie, a bunny, is nervous about his big performance in the school play. His dad tries to get him out of bed, but the youngster tries every excuse to stay home. His father makes his favorite breakfast of pancakes and he forgets his nerves until he eats so fast that he develops hiccups. All of his friends try to help him but to no avail. Remedies from holding his breath until he turns purple to trying a teacher's invention of a super-fast spinning device called the Hic-Be-Gone 3000 fail. Each part of Jamie's attempt to rid himself of the troublesome hiccups is highlighted in bubbled text so readers can follow cures such as The Hiccup Workout or Hiccups for Lunch. The cartoon-style drawings clearly depict the characters' points of view, providing decoding details for emerging readers and humorous text for reluctant ones.
