Gr 4–7—Eleven-year-old Amelia is back. In the midst of cheerleading practice and making viral videos with her superhero club, she learns that her Aunt Tanner has gone missing. Our heroine takes action, hatching a plan to find Tanner and bring her back. Rhonda comes along for the ride, further developing their friendship. The two manage to track down Amelia's aunt and make her realize that she is loved. There's a good dose of snark that may go over the heads of readers, and some silliness, but there's also a lot of heart in these pages. Amelia's world is portrayed with a refreshing honesty, full of very real emotions and modern situations. The loose, full-color illustrations have an inviting comic-strip feel. Characters are introduced in the front of the book, allowing readers to pick right up with the story. Life isn't simple, and everyone makes mistakes. In Amelia, readers will find an imperfect character to whom they can relate.—Travis Jonker, Wayland Union Schools, MI
Jimmy Gownley depicts Amelia’s developing maturity by showing the confidence with which she handles an increasingly complex set of responsibilities: dealing with old friends, her cheerleading squad, her parents, and teachers. Amelia’s nostalgia for the past and confusion about the future are wonderfully embodied in the variety of illustrations. Amelia’s recollections are rendered in stylized color while Aunt Tanner is drawn in black and white to symbolize her depression. Readers will appreciate the themes of growing up that are subtly incorporated into the story. While Amelia’s friends mount a prank that one of them calls “our childhood’s last stand,” Amelia and her friend Rhonda work to help out an adult who has always helped them.
