Gr 3–4—These books open with a list of characters found within the pages. Historical maps and facts are interspersed with dialogue balloons. Full-color illustrations are rather static. Though some history is obviously glossed over, these biographies do not glorify their subjects or their horrid treatment of the Natives as documented in
Coronado and
Ponce de Léon. However, there are too many captions for what is happening in the pictures, and they detract from the story told through the dialogue. Often readers can go through two or three pages without any dialogue at all, just a summation of the scene. A few seemingly random history websites recommended by the publisher are included.—
