PreS-Gr 2—The world can often be a place of worry, and children are not exempt from it. Hector is one of those kids--a bit of a worrier. Luckily, he LOVES his house so much that it is his favorite place to be. In fact, he loves is home so much that he rarely leaves it. Winter arrives and Hector's friends start calling on him to come and enjoy the snow. Hector thinks this is a great idea at first, but then he starts to worry… What if he gets a cold? Or gets hurt? Or he doesn't know anyone at the party? Or the hot cocoa is too hot? All these worries keep Hector away from fun and friends. The night before the Winter Party, Hector begins to worry that his worries are getting in his way. He must be brave. Hector decided to watch the party from behind the trees and before he knows it, he is at the party and having fun. Beautiful, comfortable illustrations accompany this story about facing fears and being brave. There are also notes at the back for parents, teachers, and caregivers on how to deal with an anxious child.
VERDICT This is a great story for young children who are more nervous than others. It would also be a great teaching or social story about how to be brave.
