Gr 7 Up–Although her father forbids it, Charlie is determined to become a licensed pilot and serve in the Naval Air Forces. Going against his wishes, she secretly enrolls in her high school’s aviation course and works diligently. Her twin sister, Annie, and their best friend, Victoria, are ever supportive, and handsome fellow pilot McQueen helps Charlie to train but may be interested in more. When Charlie’s father discovers her secret activities and some of his fears are validated, will she persevere? Although the author’s knowledge about aviation is impressive, the slim plot is often weighed down by didactic descriptions of flight mechanics, engine repair, details about the path to obtain a pilot’s license, famous pilots, and historical aircraft. When the climax finally comes near the end of the book, the plot has been stretched so thin that it’s difficult to feel any sense of urgency. The romance is sweet but lifeless, feeling like a foregone conclusion. Annie, Charlie, and McQueen are described as white while Victoria is Black. Charlie finds out early in the book that Annie and Victoria are in a secret relationship, but both girls are quite happy to remain secret and take male dates to the prom.
VERDICT More instruction manual about how to obtain a pilot’s license than story, this is not recommended for purchase except where there is extreme interest in aviation.
