Halloween Is a Treat!

Abrams/Appleseed. (Hello!Lucky Book). Jul. 2022. 24p. Board $7.99. ISBN 9781419751066.
Toddler-PreS–“Halloween is...” bright, bold, jolly, and very busy. The sisters Moyle have created a very successful holiday addition to their Hello!Lucky series. Charming recurring characters, a big grey cat and a smaller black cat, guide readers through this Halloween adventure. Vibrant colors and oversized animals and monsters fill the pages from beginning to end, giving the overall impression of an amusement park packed with the most thrilling rides and treats. Two-word lines of expansive text in all capital letters stretch across the board book’s spreads, varying in style from page to page. For example, “Spooky Sweets” is spelled out in red licorice, and bones make up the words on a later page. Alliterative text helps to slow the tempo in the center of the book, where the phrases, “Tricks & Treats,” “Spooky Sweets,” and “Ghoulish Grins” provide the proper pacing for readers and build to the grand finale. Children and adults will have plenty of details to pore over and opportunities to point and discuss in this delightfully kinetic, energetic book about what makes Halloween so much fun. Punny, humorous asides, such as a rabbit in a sushi costume’s “I’m on a roll” or tongue-in-cheek awards at the costume party, will entertain readers of all ages.
VERDICT This book is a laugh-out-loud, frothy treat brimming with the excitement of a Halloween party where all are invited to participate. A perfect addition to holiday collections.
