Gr 4–7—History, safety, sports, and rights are all described in a politically unbiased manner. The font is average-sized, but densely compacted on pages with few illustrations. The images largely consist of clear photographs featuring males and females of differing ages, races, and occupations using many different firearms. The clearest book for novices is Ammunition, which contains very basic information and detailed diagrams. Special Weapons provides the biggest wow factor with its description of artillery and weapons such as Tasers and grenades. The writing is casual, sometimes too much so, regularly addressing readers. The statistics are not sourced. Unless your patrons have a great interest in guns, buy titles selectively as needed.
This is a brief introduction to constitutional and legal aspects of gun ownership and use. Two-page spreads on the 1934 National Firearms Act taxing the sale of guns, the 1968 Gun Control Act limiting gun sales, and the 1993 Brady Law instituting a background check for buyers provide historical background to this simplified, even-handed discussion. Captioned photos help break up the text. Glos., ind.
These brief, choppy introductions to firearm hardware, history, and safety offer accurate and useful information on the topics. The books assume a familiarity with guns that many children don't have, making this series most appropriate for those readers who are used to hunting and gun use for home protection. Captioned photos feature lots of guns. Glos., ind. This review covers these Gun Education and Safety titles: Gun History & Development, Gun Safety, and Guns & Ammunition.
