K-Gr 2—This series uses simple sentences to provide small bits of information on popular dog breeds. The beginning of each title is dedicated to describing common physical traits, with a brief background on where and when the breed originated (or, in some cases, may have originated). The language is always positive, with adjectives such as
charming, loyal, happy, and
calm. Life span, coat color and pattern, and qualities as a family pet are covered. The last section of each book includes a scale of trainability and the dog's American Kennel Club classification. Bright backgrounds contrast well with the large type and brightly colored dog-centric photos. Most volumes conclude with photos of the dog with children and families.
VERDICT Fine choices for popular sections in most libraries.
