Gr 9 Up—This eight-part series surveys 60 notable British authors in chronological order, ranging from Old English writers of the 8th century to 20th-century writers, such as John Fowles and Doris Lessing. Each program offers an introduction to the authors of the featured time period; highlights of their major works, themes, and literary styles; important details about their personal lives; and discusses the impact of their work on society. Historical and cultural information is briefly mentioned. The series is hosted by Jonathan Cake and features aesthetic scenery and powerful readings and reenactments performed by various actors. Due to the series' scope, it only touches on each topic. The guide contains instructional notes, student learning objectives, and instructional pointers. While detailed in goals, it provides little in the way of resources or discussion topics. Overall, this is a worthwhile purchase for schools teaching courses in British or world literature.—Rebecca Flannery, Lyman Memorial High School, Lebanon, CT
