Gr 5 Up—Samso, an island off Denmark, has become a laboratory for energy independence. Using wind, solar and biomass power, all electricity and heating needs are met locally. The country is working toward total sustainable energy production by 2030. Through interviews with Danish environmentalists and visits to the sites of environmentally responsible energy production, this short documentary attempts to introduce viewers to the possibility of moving away from detrimental power sources. Low production quality, including constant music that sometimes drowns out the speakers, can make the film difficult to follow. Danish signs pertinent to the subject are not captioned for English-speaking audiences. The interview format is frequently static, and many outdoor scenes are irrelevant to the topics discussed. Although well-meaning and generally informative, the overall presentation does not lend itself to classroom use.
VERDICT The subject is important, but the presentation lacks relevance for classroom use.
