PreS-Gr 1—When Florence, a hedgehog, stays out late to experience snow with the squirrel twins, Harry and Barry, they run into a dangerous fox. Scampering home with the help of several woodland creatures, the friends have time for a feast before Florence lies down to hibernate for the winter. The predictable story may bore older readers, but the young will be amused by the near escape and age-appropriate adventure out into the dangerous world. The winter backgrounds, like the cover, are fantastically striking with the contrast of mossy-textured trees against the flat bright white of the snow. The darkness of the background sky lends a sense of danger without being too scary. The illustrations also include fun patterns that warm the autumny scenes and a tiny unmentioned mouse hidden in every scene.
VERDICT This book will fit in well with most library collections serving very young readers.
