K-Gr 2–What can Girl Scout Daisies do when they put their minds to it? Friends Ellie, Ava, and Hazel are Daisies who are able to identify a problem in their community, formulate a solution, and take action. When the trio are playing at the Daisy Lane playground one day, they realize that the area lacks a recycling bin, so they organize a cookie fundraiser to get money to purchase one. In this new collection of early readers, children will be able to see what Girl Scouts can do. Sometimes it does involve cookies, but the book goes deeper as well. The story is well paced, and the illustrations vibrant. Ava is Black with dark, curly hair; Ellie is depicted with light skin and black hair; and Hazel has brown skin and brown hair. This series starter is a great introduction to the organization that has been empowering young people since 1912.
VERDICT A fantastic purchase for communities in need of early readers and for Girl Scout troops who want to see great examples of scouts in action.
