Gr 6 Up—Informative and to the point, this DVD is full of information that teens need to hear. The format is easy to follow through short video segments featuring two teen narrators. They share the spotlight with a registered dietician, Carrie Gabriel, who relates well to the audience when she confesses that her eating habits were not the best when she was younger. The video goes on to explain what has happened to portion sizes since the 1950s. At that time, the average size of a soft drink was seven ounces. Today it is four times as large. The program also discloses information that teens may not have realized, such as the bigger the serving container, the more people are apt to eat. Tips regarding eating out and at home are easy to apply: a half of a cup of food is equivalent to one hand full. (Some of the familiar facts are based on ChooseMyPlate.gov.)
VERDICT Health teachers will want to have this resource available in order to help young people better understand the importance of portion control and learn easy-to-apply tips that do not require a lot of extra tools.
