Gr 3-7–This biography introduces Frank Lloyd Wright’s work through photographs, illustrations, pop-ups, and more. The prose is sparse, with visuals taking center stage. Most pages feature a mini-book that expands on the narrative. Buildings are featured in pop-up paper sculptures, postcards tucked into an envelope attached to a page, or pull tabs. Each page has a slightly different interactive element that is very well executed and engaging. Wright’s personal life is briefly explored, with most of the focus on his influences and architectural innovations. The book’s conclusion features a paper grid and punch-out blocks for children to use to create their own structures.
VERDICT A visually appealing book that provides a shallow understanding of Frank Lloyd Wright’s life and an overview of his most famous buildings. Libraries should carefully consider the number of pop-ups, pull tabs, and loose pieces before purchasing.
