PreS-Gr 1—This nearly wordless book features full spreads of brightly painted, quirky animals and insects in unusual environments, each informed by a set of opposite words (happy-sad, jealous-accepting, wild-polite). An unnecessary preamble on the copyright page explains that readers can use the words to help tell a story (it even begins the process as an example), and states that the paintings are so full of detail that children will repeatedly pore over the book to find all there is. There is some enjoyment to be had exploring the weird world Muggenthaler imagines, but a crowded shelf of fine wordless books makes this an additional purchase.—Lisa Egly Lehmuller, St. Patrick's Catholic School, Charlotte, NC
"Scared--brave." "Ready for fun--ready for bed." Two words or phrases, usually opposite in meaning, title a dozen surrealistic animal-filled double-page spreads. Readers are supposed to spin their own tales using the word prompts as starting points (per the preface), but surely some will think, "What's the fun in that? Tell me the story!"
