PreS-Gr 2– A young girl and her grandmother enjoy a close relationship. Having tea together and discussing their day is a much-loved tradition that began with the child selecting a teacup from her grandmother’s treasured collection. The table was always beautifully arranged with flowers, fruit, and cupcakes. So, it is confusing to the child when she notices that Grandma is sometimes absentminded: forgetting to turn the faucet off in the kitchen sink and putting her teacups in places other than their special shelf. When the girl’s parents tell her that Grandma is having difficulty remembering things, the child resolves to help her beloved grandmother as much as possible. She puts up signs to assist the older woman and vows that she will do the remembering for her.
VERDICT Used with other titles about memory loss, such as Phil Cummings’s Newspaper Hats, this gentle intergenerational story will be helpful for families in which the issues of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease need to be discussed with children.
