Science successfully introduces STEM-related fields, such as botany and physiology. In
Arts, children are exposed to the various art mediums (oils, acrylics, computer aided design, clay, photography, dance, theater, etc.) as well as a brief history of art ranging from prehistoric cave drawings to laptop audio recording.
Math conceptualizes a wide range of topics with increasing but manageable difficulty, including basic arithmetic, positive and negative integers, and basic equation writing. Each text includes a short biography of Leonardo da Vinci, a glossary, and a short listing of important individuals in the field. The illustrations, done in a Little Golden books—style, are less thoughtful. Science in particular lacks cultural sensitively, portraying characters with feather headbands and spears and stereotypical costumes. In addition, throughout the series, numerous characters are drawn with very slanted eyes.
VERDICT Most libraries will want to pass.
