Gr 3–6—This series reveals Earth's wonders to inquisitive readers, covering topics from acid rain to slime molds in three wildly colorful and glossy, slim paperbacks. The visuals are the strength of this set and will especially appeal to reluctant readers: high-quality color photographs appear on every page, while text is scattered in sidebars and pull-quotes. The writing is on the dry side, though, and Reynolds doesn't spend much time discussing relevant environmental issues such as deforestation and global warming. Educators may find the glossaries a bit limited in scope and the information on the scanty side for report or classroom use. The use of randomly bolded words on each page may be puzzling as well, as it isn't readily apparent why some terms are highlighted and others aren't.
VERDICT Curious students reading for pleasure are likely to get the most mileage from these volumes.
