Gr 5 Up—Covering key figures in the California modernist movement, this original work, which began as one of Lora's art school projects, starts with designers Charles and Ray Eames before establishing links among other noteworthy individuals. For instance, architect Richard Neutra was friends with designer Alvin Lustig, who used filmmaker Billy Wilder's garage as a studio, and so on. Loris includes a relevant quote from Charles Eames, who described social networking long before Facebook and Instagram were ubiquitous: "Eventually everything connects—people, ideas, objects… The quality of the connections is the key to quality per se." Reminiscent of the illustrations of M. Sasek and Charlie Harper, these beautiful images are vibrant and fun. The format is unique: the work is comprised of a double-sided accordion panorama of the featured individuals and a pull-out poster that lists the connections between the individuals. The poster is ideal for display but may become separated from the book during routine library circulation. As a result, this title may function best as a display piece or visual prop in a lesson plan.
VERDICT A lovely addition to library collections of art, design, and film, as well as a wonderful inspiration for student projects.
