PreS-Gr 1—Little Eva is about to start kindergarten, and her big sister Sadie is going into second grade. Sadie decides that Eva is woefully unprepared for kindergarten, and so Sadie comes up with a plan to get Eva ready. Sadie makes a classroom in their house and works on teaching Eva writing and math. Sadie also tries to show Eva how to master recess activities like the monkey bars. All their endeavors are cutely illustrated using pencil, watercolor, and a touch of Adobe Photoshop. On each page, exceptional illustrations accompany the text, which, rendered in a childlike font, tells a genuine story. As the plot progresses, the girls' parents intervene and help Sadie understand that Eva will be fine at school. As the girls attend the first day of school, Sadie sees Eva in her classroom doing well and determines that "Eva is ready for kindergarten after all." This is a great read-aloud for children getting ready to start school and for kids who might be worried about their younger siblings.
VERDICT A strongly relatable and delightful story that most libraries will have a place for in their collections.
