K-Gr 2—Children will love this story of a little wizard who really wants to fly. The tiny wizard befriends a dragon who encourages him and bakes bread with his fiery breath. It is the love for his dragon friend that finally gives el pequeño mago the will to fly. Illustrations are beautifully simple, with images in black outlines on purple backgrounds with a pop of green for the dragon. The images of the wizard are endearing and have high child appeal. Originally released in English as Little Wizard (Macmillan, 2010), Delgado's translation is well done. The book would make a nice read-aloud and tie in with the theme of friendship.
VERDICT Recommended for first purchase in libraries in need of more Spanish-language picture books.
