K-Gr 3-A crocodile detective identifies and resolves a variety of emotional scenarios. Inspector Drilo leads readers through chapters dedicated to 10 different emotions, ranging from love to disgust. Drilo's guidance helps readers define and describe what they are feeling, identify the associated facial and physical expressions, and measure the intensity (from zero to three) of each emotion in hypothetical scenarios using an "emotion-o-meter." Each feeling is represented by colorful oblong characters with names like "Mr. Mememe" for jealousy and "Yippee" for joy, and are collectively called "Emis." Overall, the title's structure is consistent and easy to follow, balancing each chapter between observing emotions in others and experiencing them personally. The message, that readers can control their emotions and that there are good and bad reasons for each (fear can protect us from danger, but irrational fear can hinder us, for instance), is empowering, and accompanied by useful strategies to cope with intense feelings and discuss further. The author's language tends to shift from overly playful to very clinical and sophisticated, and never quite strikes an appropriate tone for the intended audience.
VERDICT Contains useful information and identifiers for a variety of emotions, but its uneveness, and, at times, impracticality makes this an additional purchase for library collections.-Jessica Agudelo, New York Public Library
