Gr 6 Up—This informative documentary takes viewers through the country's rain forests, farms, cities, and so much more. It goes beyond showcasing the beautiful countryside filled with lush wildlife, its history before the arrival of the Spanish, and its rich culture, by discussing the country's current world status in terms of finances and politics. Host, journalist Peter Greenberg, shares screen time with the president of the nation, Rafael Correa, who answers questions about responsible drilling, poverty, and even Julian Assange's current living situation at the Ecuadorian Embassy in London. Correa acts as a tour guide, but parts of the program feel a bit forced or contrived. At one point, the film crew visits the president's childhood home, his former school, and even his former neighbors. While this may be endearing for fans of the president, it seems like an odd place to stop. Also, for a tour through a Spanish-speaking country, this film features very little Spanish. However, this program does inform viewers through wonderful visuals and its discussion of history and culture.
VERDICT Purchase for large collections where travel documentaries are needed.
