Gr 8 Up—The first book offers an excellent overview of economics as a discipline highlighting key thinkers, developments in the use of scientific methods to study problems, and the influential role of economists in the contemporary world. It explains economic theories and models, and their applications, significance, and contributions to history. Discussions of systems include those from prehistoric, preliterate, and centralized states as well as the kinds of systems based on tradition, command, and market. Text is dense but well organized. Sidebars explain topics like econometrics and feudalism. While it is a challenging read, the book strives to make formidable theories and models accessible. Notable Economists profiles 87 prominent figures. Arranged chronologically by date of birth, the profiles give place of birth and death; describe family life, education, career, and published works; and include honors and awards. They briefly summarize the individual's theories and models and explain their key contributions to the field. Most entries are one or two pages long and include an illustration or photograph. Many Nobel laureates are included. The high-level vocabulary of economic thought and complex sentence structures require careful reading.
