Toddler-PreS–Easter is on its way, but the Easter Bunny is not hopping down the bunny trail. Where could the Easter Bunny be? A fluffy tail pokes out from behind a flowering bush. “Baa!” It’s a sheep. Who is hiding behind the apple tree? “Quack! Quack!” It’s a duckling. Burton’s simple rhyming board book invites children for a playful lift-the-flap game of hide-and-seek, searching for the missing Easter Bunny. Along the way, children will round up cuddly, animated baby animal friends, presenting the opportunity for conversation about the names of baby animals and to practice the sounds they make. Motzko’s cheerful illustrations are boldly colored and sure to hold the attention of even the youngest readers. Backgrounds are sprinkled with the quintessential sights of a pleasant, blue-skied spring day: searching birds, fluttering butterflies, bright flowers, and red-capped polka dot mushrooms. Red borders outline each inset, liftable flap, visually signaling to children where the Easter Bunny could be hiding. The inset flaps may give the board book marginally greater durability to withstand the jostle and excitement of the demands of circulation and little hands.
VERDICT This book is not particularly noteworthy in a crowd of comparable Easter themed board books, but will delight young readers nonetheless.
