Gr 9 Up–Kole Miller, a high school junior in small-town Vermont, writes a popular fan fiction blog for her favorite science fiction show. Kole’s kept her identity secret, especially after a middle school friendship ended because of her obsession. When someone at her school figures out her secret, he blackmails and bullies her. After going along with his demands, Kole realizes it’s not worth it—she stands up to her bullies. Kole simply wants her life and her blog back and for everyone to enjoy their OTPs (one true pairing) without degrading the ships of others. This book will hook readers who love fan fiction. It has some plot holes (how the blog was discovered, teachers allowing bullying, the major conflict), but readers will enjoy the fandom and the snippets from Kole’s blog. Kole is cued as white, and her best friend Michaela is Black and bisexual.
VERDICT A fun, escapist read. Give this one to fans of Francesca Zappia’s Eliza and Her Monsters or Marisa Kanter’s What I Like About You.
