PreS—These visually appealing board books introduce toddlers to familiar and not-so-familiar animals in English, Spanish, and French. Don't Move! invites children to play a guessing game by giving them a glimpse of the creature on one page, followed by a full-body view on the next. The illustrations are stylized, and not all the animals will be that easily guessed. Each creature is represented in a solid color—mostly black—against a colored background to striking effect. At the conclusion, children and their adult readers discover that the animals are being posed for a photograph. "Smile! Souriez! ¡Sonrían!" In Hurry Up! the cast of animals are presented one by one in stark black-and-white, a bit of color provided by the pastel-hued text. What are the animals hurrying up for? A storytime, of course! In the last spread, readers will find the animals settled in front of a mouse holding, appropriately enough, a copy of The Jungle Book. Because the trilingual text in both books consists mostly of one word per page, it does not clutter the page.
VERDICT A nice addition to the ever-expanding animal board book shelf.
