K-Gr 2—Part of a series dedicated to child empowerment, this import illustrates why one should speak up for oneself. Young Jill fears reprisals, so she does not protest when her school chum borrows and ruins her favorite toy, the neighbor boys suggest she join them in watching a scary film, and playmates cause her to be late going home. Instead of reprimands, Mom issues instruction that not saying no to others when you want something else is really saying no to yourself. Lammertink provides end pages with information for parents and teachers, including "Tips to Try." Georger's large and brightly colored cartoon illustrations are reminiscent of Lauren Child's art and bring levity to the somewhat didactic text.—
