K-Gr 4–Pup siblings Betsy and Bones decide to take a trip to London. While Betsy looks forward to enjoying the trip in a scheduled and orderly manner, Bones is set on a more spontaneous adventure. Upon arriving in London, Betsy begins to explain her plan for seeing the sights; Bones doesn’t bother to listen. Instead, he pulls her onto a double-decker red bus and then to the London Eye, where they ride the huge Ferris wheel. From there, Betsy is literally dragged from one attraction to the next by her eager brother. The two experience the Thames River up close and personal, visit the Tower of London, watch a cricket game, meet the queen at Buckingham Palace, and see Big Ben. Throughout the story, Betsy shares facts about the places they visit, while Bones is too busy experiencing everything he possibly can, albeit in a haphazard manner. As frustrating as this is for Betsy, she does get to check off many items on her to-do list. Black-and-white illustrations contrast with the larger brown-and-gold backgrounds throughout the book. Speech bubbles are used for dialogue, while one to two sentences narrate the story. Some illustrations cover an entire page, while others are divided into panels, much like a graphic novel or comic book.
VERDICT This hilarious adventure to London will be adored by younger fans of graphic novels while they learn about new places abroad. A perfect book for readers transitioning to longer books.
