PreS-Gr 2—This lavishly illustrated work offers students the opportunity to search for animals hidden within their natural habitats. Each spread features a particular biome, from deserts and mountains to rain forests. A variety of creatures flood each spread, including several that are in danger of becoming extinct. Children are encouraged to search for the threatened species hidden among nonendangered ones. The searches do range in difficulty, with some more challenging than others. Back matter contains information regarding the location and status of each endangered animal, the reason for it being threatened, and the population known to be remaining. Often these numbers are distressingly small. It may be tough for young children to fully comprehend the ramifications of extinction, but this will help introduce them to the concept of habitats as well as the importance of a balanced ecosystem.
VERDICT The interactive nature of this work makes it best suited for a guided group exercise or shared one-on-one with a child. An additional purchase for elementary collections.
