Gr 9 Up—This Australian production offers a brief overview of deserts around the world. Quickly flashing images illustrate the major deserts and the difference between deserts and dry climates is explained. The desertification of semi-arid areas through over-cultivation and increased human activity is explained and the reasons for concern are presented. Among the topics covered are the climate and physical characteristics of deserts and how people adapt to living in the ecosystem. The images of the deserts are beautiful, but the program could have been improved with more examples provided. The succinct narrative presents snapshots rather than an in depth exploration. Useful as an introduction to the topic.—Eva Elisabeth VonAncken, formerly Trinity-Pawling School, NY
