Gr 5–8—These titles establish how agricultural advances and nuclear power have raised the quality of life in Western and industrialized regions. However, the benefits often come with consequences that wreak havoc on the environment and people's health, and the impact cannot always be easily reversed. Each book contains four to five chapters and presents authoritative information, including research findings, about the destruction of the world's soils and food supplies and the negative effects of radiation and pesticides. The books provide advice about what readers can do to improve or prevent these problems. Well-chosen photos and captions are integrated into the text. Additional sidebars contain myths, facts, and 10 questions that students can ask an environmentalist.—
