PreS-K—Snow White and Cinderella, pen pals commiserating about living with wicked stepmothers and sharing their dreams for meeting handsome princes, star in this cartoon spinoff of the classic tales. Their letters capture the highlights of their respective stories—being left in the woods, fairy godmothers, poisoned apples, and missing glass slippers—but that is where any comparison to the originals end. The cheerful notes are full of sappy details about sparkly pink dresses, twirling on dance floors, and special kisses that break sleeping spells. Each correspondence is accompanied by a full-page cartoon watercolor painting, one depicting friendly little men and another showing a joyful Cinderella singing as she completes her chores. Readers clamoring for Disney princess stories will delight in the happily-ever-after but those who enjoy a more traditional approach will want to look elsewhere.—
Kristine M. Casper, Huntington Public Library, NYThe stories of Cinderella and Snow White are given epistolary treatment in this picture book. In letters back and forth, pen pals Cinderella and Snow White confide in each other about evil stepmother struggles, chores, dreams, blossoming romances, and fairy-tale endings. The final scene is of their double wedding at the Royal Palace. Accompanied by unattractive illustrations, the lighthearted correspondence is fun to read.
