Gr 8 Up—What is bullying? Why are some kids bullied? Can bullying happen online? What can be done about bullying? Alexa Gordon Murphy answers these questions and more in her book (Chelsea House, 2009) as she takes listeners through many aspects of bullying. For each topic, she shares vivid examples, often using quotes from real people involved in these situations. Former bullies explain why they bullied and victims describe the effects of bullying on their lives. Murphy cites official reports and statistics throughout the book to lend credibility, and relates stories of famous people who were bullied to pique listeners' interest. Particularly noteworthy are the strategies she advocates for dealing with the problem. While the message is important, Victoria McGee reads the text as if she is narrating an old-fashioned filmstrip, which may turn off students.—Amanda Rollins, Northwest Village School, Plainville, CT
