Gr 9 Up–In a realm of kingdoms full of adventure, intrigue, and romance, the characters central to this story must prevail in order to save their world from the next Great Dying. Told from multiple points of view, the story centers around the evolution of three main characters, Marcus, Ash, and Kaylin. Marcus Adicio, son of the Magistrate, Heir to the Throne, and a green-robed savant from Baiseen, must learn how to work with the powerful warrior savant he raises. Ash, a female Baiseen scribe who accompanies Marcus, writes of his exploits as she believes she has no magical gifts of her own. Kaylin portrays himself as a simple pirate-turned-guide who only has eyes for Ash, but he has an uncanny affinity for mermaids and other creatures of the deep. As the relationships grow between the three characters, savants, and the wider world, the world begins to teeter on the brink of cataclysm. Wilder has created a magical, enthralling world that keeps readers engaged from the first page. Most characters are cued as white and male, apart from Ash, a strong female lead.
VERDICT Recommended for fantasy fans, especially those who enjoyed Leigh Bardugo’s “Shadow and Bone” trilogy and Rin Chupeco’s “The Bone Witch” trilogy.
